General information about Italy
Italy is a country located partly in southern Europe on the Italian peninsula and also on the two largest islands in the Mediterranean: Sicily and Sardinia.
Italy shares the northern alpine borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. While within the Italian territory there are two independent states which are the enclaves of San Marino and the Vatican City, and there is also an enclosure Campione Ditalia in Switzerland.
The Italian territory covers an area of 301,338 km2 and is affected by a moderate monsoon climate. The country has 60.2 million people and is the sixth most populous country in Europe, and is the 23rd most populated country in the world.
The lands known today as Italy were the cradle of European cultures and peoples such as the Etruscans and Romans. The Italian capital, Rome, was for many centuries the political center of Western civilization as the capital of the Roman Empire.
After the decline of the empire, Italy was subjected to invasions by foreign peoples from the Germanic tribes such as the Ostrogoths, the Lombards, the Norman people at a later time, the Byzantines and others.
After several centuries, Italy became the cradle of the Renaissance, which was a very fruitful intellectual movement that proved its ability to shape the course of European thought later.
Culture and history
Ancient Rome was initially a small agricultural society around the eighth century BC, but it grew over the centuries to become a formidable empire controlling the entire Mediterranean basin, thus merging the Greek and Roman civilizations into one civilization. This civilization was highly influenced by later civilizations, as some of its laws, administrative organizations, philosophy and arts are still clearly visible in its contemporary Western counterpart in particular, and thus it forms the ground on which Western civilization is based.
During its existence, which lasted for 12 centuries, Rome transformed from a kingdom to a republic and finally to an authoritarian state, before entering a steady decline since the second century AD, and then divided into two parts in 285 AD: the Western Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire in the East. The western part collapsed under the pressure of the Goths’ raids in the end, leaving the Italian peninsula divided into small independent kingdoms and rival city-states during the next fourteen centuries. As a result, the eastern part became the sole heir of the Roman legacy.
