Trip Advisor reveals the best attractions in the world for
TripAdvisor has revealed the world’s top attractions by collecting booking data in 2019. Noting that seven of the top ten tourist places are located in the continent of Europe. The Colosseum in Rome came first, followed by the Louvre in Paris and the Vatican Museums in Vatican City. In this report, we review the top ten most attractive.

The Colosseum, Rome, Italy
The Colosseum in Rome is the most popular tourist attraction in the world, for the second time in a row. Built in AD 80, the ancient amphitheater is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and can accommodate 50,000 people. Last year, it had more than seven million visitors – that’s 21,000 visitors a day. Tickets cost £12 (£10), or free on the first Sunday of the month.

Louvre Museum, Paris, France
The Louvre in Paris overtook the iconic Eiffel Tower to second place. It is the largest art museum in the world, opened in 1793 and is now home to around 38,000 objects. Most people visit to see the Mona Lisa, as well as the Venus de Milo — or to see the building in the music video for Beyonce’s Apes**t after the entire museum is closed. Tickets cost €17 (£14), or free on the first Saturday of the month.

Also in Italy, the Vatican Museums are some of the most popular attractions. Inside are religious artworks collected by popes over the centuries. The most famous is the Sistine Chapel, with the ceiling painted by Michelangelo. Tickets cost €26 (£21).

Statue of Liberty, New York City, United States
The Statue of Liberty is often on tourists’ bucket lists when visiting New York City. Dedicated to the United States by France in 1886, this statue represents the Roman goddess of freedom Libertas, holding a torch and a tablet with the date of the American Declaration of Independence. You can ascend to the statue’s crown, but you have to buy tickets in advance, with a limit on the number of visitors per day – so many choose to see the statue by ferry to Staten Island instead. Tickets to the grounds including the ferry cost $18.50 (£14) while tickets to the crown are $21.50 (£16).

The Eiffel Tower is a popular tourist attraction, ranked fifth in popularity. It was built in 1887 and named after Gustave Eiffel. Although the structure was originally hated by Parisians, it is now a landmark in the city that was the tallest building in the world for 41 years (until the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930). However, you may be breaking the law if you take pictures of the Eiffel Tower at night. Tickets start at €10.20 (£8).

Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain
La Sagrada Familia is Antoni Gaudí’s most famous work, although it is still unfinished. Construction began in 1882, before Gaudi’s death in 1926. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can visit the gardens and towers that are expected to be finished by 2026 – 100 years since the architect’s death. Tickets start at €17 (£14).

New Orleans’ French Quarter is the city’s oldest, and one of the world’s most popular attractions. Also known as Vieuz Carre, it has a French open-air market, as well as the famous 2.5-acre Jackson Square and Bourbon Street, known for its neon signs and live jazz. Many tourists visit between February and March for the New Orleans Mardi Gras Festival. Free to visit.

The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam is a popular tourist attraction with tourists who are able to visit the attic that houses the Jewish diarist. First opened in 1960, it allows visitors to see the library that hid the annex as well as objects, photos, and Anne’s original diary. In 2016, Justin Bieber was criticized for claiming that Anne was a fan of him while signing tribute after his visit. Tickets cost €10.50 (£8).

Sky Deck Chicago – Willis Tower, Chicago, US
The Skydeck is located on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower in Chicago, 1,353 feet in the air. Brave tourists can try The Ledge, a more glassed-in balcony that extends out of the building. Earlier this year, a family was left aghast after the translucent floor cracked as they stepped on it, although the spokesperson said it was just a protective covering and not a glass floor. Tickets cost $25 (£18).

n tourists find St. Mark’s Cathedral, Doge’s Palace and the world’s oldest café, Café Florian. It was built in the 9th century, but it is the lowest point in Venice, which means that it often flows. It was closed last month after historic floods left the city under water. Free to visit.
